The South Korean embassy in Phnom Penh said approximately 100 reported cases of abduction and detention of South Koreans in the country during the past two years remain unsolved.

At a parliamentary audit in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, the embassy said such cases totaled fewer than 20 in 2023, but the number grew to 220 in 2024 and 330 between January and August of this year.

The embassy added that 450 out of 550 cases from the past two years were solved after the victims were either rescued or released, but that 100 individuals remain unaccounted for.

During the audit of the South Korean embassies in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, lawmakers from both ends of the political aisle called for a response to the rising number of abductions and detentions of South Koreans in the region.
