Police are planning to establish a “Korean Desk” in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, to better respond to cases involving Korean nationals.

According to a response plan submitted Thursday to Democratic Party lawmaker Wi Seong-gon, the National Police Agency plans to increase the number of officers stationed in Cambodia from three to eight.

At least five additional officers will be sent to address a recent surge in kidnapping and illegal detention cases.

The Korean Desk will first be set up in Sihanoukville, a region known for a high concentration of criminal activity, with two officers dedicated specifically to cases involving Korean nationals.

Unlike embassy-based liaison officers, these officers will work directly with the local police, allowing for faster cooperation in investigations.
