A Seoul court has rejected habeas corpus petitions submitted by Rep. Kweon Seong-dong and Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja and will keep both in custody as corruption investigations continue.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the rulings on Wednesday, hours after concluding hearings to review the legality of their detention.

The court said that after reviewing extensive interrogation results and case records, it found no justification for the two suspects' release.

Kweon, a member of the opposition People Power Party, stands accused of receiving 100 million won, or approximately 73-thousand U.S. dollars, in illegal political funds from the Unification Church in 2022.

Prosecutors say Han provided the funds to Kweon and offered luxury gifts to former first lady Kim Keon-hee in exchange for favorable treatment toward her organization.
