The National Assembly is set to vote Friday evening on a government reorganization bill that would abolish the central prosecutors' office and split the functions of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Rep. Park Soo-min of the main opposition People Power Party(PPP) spoke for 17 hours and 12 minutes, a record for a single lawmaker, but the ruling Democratic Party(DP) will likely force a vote, ending the debate, after 24 hours, and push the bill through using its majority.

The DP hailed the legislation as a landmark in prosecutorial reform, saying it permanently separates the powers of investigation and indictment.

The PPP denounced the measure as a “criminal's dream law” and called dividing the finance ministry a "populist" move that would enable reckless spending.

Separately, a contentious bill to reorganize the Korea Communications Commission is expected to prompt another PPP filibuster once the reorganization bill vote has concluded.
