A foreign ministry official said Friday that Seoul is in talks with Beijing to arrange a meeting between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit in Gyeongju late next month.

If confirmed, the summit would mark Xi’s first visit to South Korea in 11 years, since his 2014 state visit under the Park Geun-hye administration.

Officials said the summit would likely take place in Seoul rather than Gyeongju, which primarily has facilities designed for larger events.

The two sides are discussing whether to hold the meeting before or after the APEC gathering, which runs October 31 to November 1.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated earlier this week that a bilateral visit could be arranged if Xi were to attend the APEC summit.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit South Korea soon to finalize details.
