A deluge was reported overnight in the drought-stricken city of Gangneung in eastern Gangwon Province.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), 86-point-nine millimeters of rain was observed in the coastal city between noon Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

Worst hit areas of Sacheon and Yeongok reported a cumulative rainfall of 110-point-six millimeters and 107 millimeters as of 8 a.m.

The reserve rate at the Obong reservoir, which supplies 87 percent of domestic water to Gangneung residents, rose zero-point-six percentage point from a day earlier to 12-point-one percent as of 10 a.m. Saturday.

Although the reserve rate is equivalent to just one-sixth of the annual average of 71-point-four percent, it is the first increase since July 23.

On social media Saturday, President Lee Jae Myung welcomed news of the rain, expressing hope that it will offer some consolation to the city residents.
