South Korea, a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council, will take on the council’s presidency for the month of September.

According to the UN headquarters on Sunday, South Korea will formally begin its presidency Tuesday morning and preside over informal consultations to adopt the Security Council’s September agenda.

The Security Council, the UN’s core body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, is composed of 15 member states.

Each member assumes the presidency for one month, taking turns in alphabetical order based on country names.

South Korea is currently serving as an elected member of the UN Security Council for the 2024–2025 term, and this is the first time the country has held the presidency since June 2024.
