The Democratic Party’s special judicial reform committee announced on Wednesday that it will introduce five reform bills in early September, including one to expand the number of Supreme Court justices.

The package also includes measures to diversify the nomination committee, reform the judicial evaluation system, expand public access to lower-court rulings, and require preexamination of search and seizure warrants.

The plan follows a public hearing at the National Assembly where citizens, students and local officials offered feedback on the proposals.

Participants voiced both support and concerns, with some backing a larger Supreme Court for faster rulings while others warned against excessive political influence over judicial appointments.

Committee chair Rep. Baek Hye-ryun pledged to deliver reforms “the public can truly feel” and said she hopes to share progress before the Chuseok holiday.
