American gymnast Paul Hamm, whose Olympic men's all-around victory has been protested by South Korean officials, said he would give back his gold medal if the International Gymnastics Federation officials declare that is the proper course. Hamm said in a press conference Sunday he would give back the gold medal if the FIG decides he should. Hamm added, however, that he personally believes he is still the Olympic champion. South Korea raised objections that its gymnast, Yang Tae Young, was given a start value of 9.9 rather than ten on his horizontal bar routine in the all-around final rotation. If Yang had started from 10 rather than 9.9, he would have defeated Hamm for the all-around gold medal by .051 of a point Wednesday rather than finishing third by .049 behind Hamm and compatriot Kim Dae Eun. FIG officials agreed the judging was in error and suspended three judges involved, but said the judges' scores could not be appealed. The International Gymast magazine has verified that one of the three officials suspended for their judgement error, is Colombian judge Oscar Buitrago Reyes, who has lived and worked in Hamm's homestate Ohio for several years. The magazine website reported Buitrago is a girl's team coach and professional member of USA Gymnastics, the governing body which oversees the sport in the United States. Columnists in several American newspapers called for Hamm to give up his gold medal to the Korean or ask that a duplicate gold be awarded, but the FIG asserted that the result, with Hamm as the winner, would stand. Yang and Hamm will compete against each other once more on the horizontal bar on Monday in the individual event final during the concluding medal session of gymnastics.
