S. Korea Wins First Olympic Gold in Men

South Korea's Lee Won-hee has brought the South Korean nation its long-awaited first gold medal at the Olympics in Athens.

Lee defeated Russian Vitaliy Makarov with an ippon, or match-winning throw, to claim the gold medal in the men's 73 kg class judo final held late Monday night.

Lee piled up marginal points with a variety of techniques, topping off with a leg throw that stopped the fight with just nine seconds remaining in the five-minute match.

Also on Monday, Lee Bo-na won a bronze medal in the Olympic Women's trap shooting competition by marking 83, following Australian Suzanne Balogh and Spain's Maria Quintanal. It was the first time for South Korea to win a medal in the trap shooting event at the Olympics.

As of Tuesday morning, South Korea ranks 12th in the medal rankings with one gold and two bronzes.

In other judo action, North Korea's world champion Kye Sun-Hui won the silver medal in the women's under-57 kg lightweight final.
