World Leaders Sign Olympic Truce Accord

Written: 2004-08-15 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

An Olympic truce accord is being signed by world leaders and dignitaries in a symbolic bid to halt all conflicts and warfare at least during the 16 days of the sport event.
The truce accord was inspired by an ancient practice when historical city states laid down their arms before entering sport games.
Some 450 luminaries worldwide have signed the accord including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Queen Sophie of Spain, Pope John Paul the 2nd, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former US President Bill Clinton.
The organization hosting the signing event said it invited President Bush as well, only to be denied. When asked on the idea of an Olympic peace accord, US State Secretary Colin Powell said Friday although the ideal is worthy of praise, the real world does not revolve around the Olympic Games alone.
American troops are currently engaged in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
