A special parliamentary committee formed to investigate treason allegations surrounding President Yoon Suk Yeol’s December 3 martial law decree has met for the first time and approved the launch of a 45-day probe.
Under the plan, the investigation will start Tuesday after approval by a plenary session later in the day and target the presidential office, the defense ministry and other related agencies in connection with their roles in the short-lived martial law incident.
The 18-member committee, chaired by main opposition Democratic Party Rep. Ahn Gyu-back, consists of ten lawmakers from the main opposition party, seven from the ruling People Power Party and one from the minor Basic Income Party.
The rival parties were at odds over the wording of the plan, with ruling party lawmakers demanding an amendment to avoid the presumption that President Yoon is guilty of treason.
The opposition wanted to widen the focus of the investigation to include allegations that Yoon planned to impose martial law a second time.
An extension of the 45-day probe may be permitted through a plenary decision.
