Finance minister and deputy prime minister Choi Sang-mok is taking over duties as the new acting president. 

Choi's move to the top leadership post comes after Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was suspended as acting president following the passage of a motion to impeach him in the National Assembly on Friday. 

According to the finance ministry, Choi will meet with Han and speak with the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman before issuing written orders to the ministers of foreign affairs, defense, and the interior. 

Choi's acting president role become official once the original copy of the motion to impeach Han is delivered to the Constitutional Court and a copy of the motion is delivered to Han. 

As acting president, Choi is set to issue a written statement to the public and convene a meeting of the National Security Council.
