South Korea has officially become a "super-aged society" with 20 percent of its population aged 65 and over, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on Tuesday.

According to data from the ministry, as of Monday, the number of people aged 65 and older in the country stood at 10-million 244-thousand-550, accounting for 20 percent of the total registered population of 51-million 221-thousand-286.

The United Nations(UN) classifies societies based on the proportion of the population aged 65 and over, with the society considered "aging" if the percentage exceeds seven percent, "aged" if it surpasses 14 percent and "super-aged" if it exceeds 20 percent.

By gender, the proportion of men aged 65 and over in the country stood at 17-point-eight percent and 22-point-two percent for women.

By region, the greater Seoul area accounted for 17-point-seven percent of the total registered senior population, while those outside the capital region accounted for 22-point-four percent.
