Unionized workers at the Korea Railroad Corporation(KORAIL) have launched an indefinite general strike as announced, after last-minute negotiations with management fell through on Wednesday.

Railway workers began to reduce passenger and freight train service on Thursday, inconveniencing passengers and disrupting freight transport.

KORAIL and the union started last-minute negotiations on a wage increase Wednesday afternoon but failed to reach an agreement.

KORAIL plans to operate a 24-hour emergency team and mobilize all available resources to minimize inconvenience for passengers.

During the strike, subway service in the capital region is expected to continue at 75 percent of the usual level.

The corresponding figures are 67 percent for KTX bullet trains, 58 percent for regular Saemaeul trains and 22 percent for freight trains.
