The main opposition Democratic Party says it will file treason charges against President Yoon Suk Yeol, as well as his defense and interior ministers, and impeach them.
Democratic Party spokesperson Rep. Jo Seoung-lae announced the plans Wednesday after Yoon declared martial law the previous night and subsequently lifted it in accordance with a parliamentary resolution.
The spokesman said Yoon’s actions in declaring martial law were unconstitutional and illegal and that his martial law commander, his police commissioner general, and others who joined in must also be punished for treason.
Holding 170 seats in the 300-member parliament, the Democratic Party can remove a sitting president if it secures a two-thirds majority, which will require 21 votes from minor opposition parties, one from an independent lawmaker and eight from the ruling People Power Party.
If Yoon is impeached, he will be suspended from his duties until the Constitutional Court decides whether to restore him or remove him from office.
