Railway workers will launch an indefinite general strike on Thursday.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union(KPTU) said the general strike was initially planned to address inequality for railway and subway workers, but that now is the time to fight the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, which declared martial law.
The Korean Railway Workers’ Union will launch the general strike at a massive rally at Seoul Station at noon Thursday, with similar rallies set for four other locations across the nation, including Busan and Daejeon.
Ahead of the walkout, the Korea Railroad Corporation(KORAIL) issued a notice on its website and social media, saying the planned walkout may cause rail service disruptions if labor and management fail to reach an agreement during negotiations.
A KORAIL official said the company will mobilize all available resources to ensure safety in train operations, expressing hope for a positive outcome during Wednesday’s negotiations.
