The main opposition Democratic Party has called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to step down immediately, saying it will begin impeachment procedures unless he resigns voluntarily. 

The party made the appeal in a resolution early Wednesday morning after an emergency meeting of its lawmakers at the National Assembly, after Yoon declared martial law and then lifted it.

The resolution emphasized that the imposition of martial law was a clear violation of the Constitution, saying Yoon did not comply with any of the requirements.

The opposition party said the declaration of martial law by Yoon was invalid and a serious violation of the Constitution and the law, amounting to a serious act of rebellion and clear grounds for impeachment.
 
The party then warned that it will launch impeachment proceedings against Yoon unless he steps down immediately.
