The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) has ordered all its representatives to gather at the National Assembly for an emergency meeting, in response to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s late-night declaration of martial law.

According to a DP official Tuesday night, the lawmakers are in the process of gathering at the Assembly.

They are widely expected to discuss procedures to lift the state of martial law.

Under Article 77, Section 5, of the Constitution, the president is required to lift martial law upon request by parliament.

The DP currently holds 170 seats in the 300-member Assembly.

The main opposition is expected to issue an official statement soon regarding the declaration of martial law.
