Main opposition Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung kept silent before attending his corruption trial in connection with the Seongnam development case, having been found not guilty of subornation of perjury last week.
Before appearing in court on Tuesday to face accusations about the Daejang-dong and Wirye projects, Lee did not answer questions from the media about the prosecution’s decision to appeal his acquittal in the subornation of perjury case.
Lee was indicted in March last year and accused of approving the Daejang-dong project when he was mayor of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, allegedly giving favors to private developers for a combined profit of 788-point-six billion won, or around 563 million U.S. dollars.
The prosecution suspects the alleged favors cost the Seongnam Development Corporation 489-point-five billion won.
Lee is also accused of providing inside information about the Wirye project to private developers, allowing them to make a profit of 21-point-one billion won.
The main opposition chief also faces charges of offering administrative favors to corporations in return for a donation totaling 13-point-35 billion won for the Seongnam municipal football club, which he headed while serving as mayor.
