The Korea Communications Standards Commission listed cloud-based messaging app Telegram this month as an overseas platform partner of cooperation to block online distribution of illicit contents.

According to the nation's media regulator on Monday, Telegram was added to the existing list of eleven platforms, including Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

The enlistment allows the commission to request Telegram to swiftly respond to illicit contents on its platform, such as sexually exploitative materials and information on narcotics.

In September, the commission set up a hotline with Telegram, confirming the platform's deletion of sexually exploitative contents using the deepfake technology, as well as narcotics-related information upon its request.

The commission intends to further enhance cooperation with Telegram to prevent the circulation of illicit contents and to protect domestic internet users.
