A legal basis has been established for the central and local governments to establish measures aimed at managing public health in response to the climate change.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) said on Monday that related revisions to the Framework Act on Health and Medical Services passed the National Assembly.

The revisions come in response to rising cases of heat and cold-related illnesses, infectious diseases and depression amid heat waves, cold snaps, drought and other meteorological phenomena due to the climate change.

Under the revised law, the KDCA plans to expand disease monitoring, advance the assessment of the climate's impact on health, and bolster related cooperation between central and local governments.

Meanwhile, the enactment of another law on infectious disease prevention and management will offer the basis for establishing a national vaccine development center.
