The ruling People Power Party(PPP) has agreed to participate in a parliamentary investigation into last year’s marine death report.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, PPP floor leader Choo Kyung-ho said the ruling party intends to deliver a list of its representatives to take part in the probe to the office of National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik.
Choo said his party had initially opposed the investigation, which he accused the main opposition Democratic Party(DP) of attempting to use for political warfare, but that it has decided to participate to prevent the opposition from abusing the system.
The floor leader said the PPP intends to ensure that the truth is revealed.
While the PPP expects around seven of its lawmakers to take part in the probe in line with the apportionment of parliamentary seats, the DP submitted a list of ten representatives on Wednesday.
The marine, identified as Corporal Chae, was swept away in a torrent during the search operation in a rain-damaged region of Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province, on July 19, 2023, and later found dead.
