The presidential office has urged the main opposition Democratic Party(DP) to withdraw its plan to introduce a downsized budget bill for next year in a plenary parliamentary session on Monday.

Presidential spokesperson Jeong Hye-jeon made the appeal on Sunday in a press briefing, saying the government will not engage in any negotiations unless the party withdraws the bill.

The spokesperson said that if the opposition’s unilateral budget cuts have any adverse consequences for the public order, diplomacy or the people’s economic well-being, the DP will be solely responsible.

Earlier in the day, DP Chairman Lee Jae-myung said the government can submit a revised bill to increase the budget and that his party is open to renegotiating the details.

The DP, which railroaded its budget proposal through a parliamentary budget committee on Friday, plans to table the bill at a plenary session on Monday, the statutory deadline for approving the national budget.
