The main opposition Democratic Party (DP), which railroaded a budget proposal that only reflects reductions in a parliamentary budget committee session on Friday, has decided to table the budget bill to a plenary parliamentary session on Monday.
DP floor leader Park Chan-dae told reporters on Sunday that the party has inevitably decided to table the bill on Monday, December 2, the statutory deadline for approving the national budget.
Park called the decision a "special measure to normalize national finances."
The proposal railroaded by the DP puts next year's budget at 677-point-four trillion won, down four-point-one trillion won from the initial plan proposed by the government.
Park said that the party has made its best effort to secure budgets for six areas closely linked to the nation's future and people's livelihoods but failed to reach an agreement with the ruling party, and the Finance Ministry did not agree to an increase in the budget, which is why the DP has decided to table a proposal that only reflects reductions.
The floor leader added that the DP also plans to handle other bills related to the budget on Monday.
