South Korea’s presidential office says “nothing has been finalized” regarding Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s possible visit to Seoul, after a Japanese daily said it could take place in January.

In a notice to the media on Thursday, the top office said President Yoon Suk Yeol and his Japanese counterpart have agreed to push for the continuation of shuttle diplomacy between the two sides, without giving further details.

Earlier, Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Seoul and Tokyo have begun negotiations for Ishiba’s first visit to South Korea in early January for a summit with Yoon.

The last time the leaders of the two countries met in Seoul was in September, when former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited before his resignation.

Since Ishiba took office in October, he and Yoon have met on the margins of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Laos last month and at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Peru earlier this month.
