Subway workers in Seoul are set to begin a joint walkout next week with railway and education workers across the country.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union(KPTU) said the Korea Railway Workers’ Union plans to go on strike starting next Thursday.
The Seoul Transit Corporation Labor Union at Seoul Metro, the operator of subway lines 1 to 8, will launch a similar action next Friday along with the Education Support Workers Solidarity Division and a union chapter representing workers on Subway Line No. 9.
The Cargo Truckers Solidarity is planning its own walkout Monday and Tuesday, and unions for national pension, public gas and local government workers will follow suit in the coming days.
The KPTU blamed the Yoon Suk Yeol administration for prompting the joint collective action through its incompetent handling of state affairs, saying all the walkouts are intended to protect human life and safety.
The unions are calling for greater protection of labor rights, opposing any move to privatize public services, and demanding President Yoon’s resignation.
