Main opposition Democratic Party(DP) leader Lee Jae-myung is expected to focus on bread-and-butter issues now that he has been acquitted of subornation of perjury.
Lee attended a party meeting Tuesday, the day after his acquittal, to discuss the agenda for the economy and the people’s economic well-being.
He is set to hold an open debate next week with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Korea Enterprises Federation about proposed revisions to the Commercial Act, after the opposition’s changes met with objections from businesses.
Despite uneasiness within the main opposition party regarding a tax deferment for virtual assets that the ruling People Power Party(PPP) is pushing, the DP chief may consent to it in an attempt to expand his support base among moderates ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
The DP is expected to strengthen its offensive against the prosecution after Lee’s acquittal, with party deputy policy chief Kim Yong-min demanding an apology for the indictment and a promise not to appeal the verdict.
DP floor leader Park Chan-dae ramped up pressure on President Yoon Suk Yeol and PPP leader Han Dong-hoon to accept the DP-tabled bill on a special counsel investigation targeting first lady Kim Keon-hee.
