The government has approved a motion demanding that the National Assembly reconsider a bill mandating a special counsel probe into allegations involving first lady Kim Keon-hee.

The Cabinet approved the motion Tuesday morning in a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, 12 days after the bill passed the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

The bill calls for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the first lady’s alleged involvement in a stock manipulation scheme and interference in election nominations through power broker Myung Tae-kyun.

President Yoon Suk Yeol can exercise his right to veto the bill by Friday.

Yoon has vetoed 24 bills since taking office in May 2022.

Two earlier versions of the bill were vetoed by Yoon and then scrapped in a revote at the parliament.
