A court is set to rule in the case of main opposition Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung, who stands accused of subornation of perjury.

The Seoul Central District Court will begin its hearing at 2 p.m. Monday, ten days after Lee received a suspended sentence in a separate case for breaking the election law by lying during his presidential campaign.

The party leader was indicted in October last year on charges of subornation of perjury for allegedly urging Kim Jin-seong, a secretary to former Mayor Kim Byung-ryang of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to provide false testimony in February 2019 in an election law case involving Lee.

Lee maintains that he only asked the secretary to testify in accordance with his memory, but the secretary testified in January that he lied at Lee’s request.

In September, the prosecution asked the court for a three-year prison term for Lee.

If Lee receives a prison term that is not overturned on appeal, he will be stripped of his parliamentary seat and barred from running in the next presidential election.
