The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs says one of its senior officials will attend an upcoming memorial event to honor the victims of forced labor at the country’s Sado mines.

According to the ministry on Friday, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Akiko Ikuina will visit Sado City from November 23 to 24 to attend the memorial service.

South Korean Ambassador to Japan Park Cheol-hee will reportedly attend on behalf of South Korea.

The event will take place at the Aikawa Development Center on Sado Island to honor Koreans and other workers forced into hard labor during World War II.

It is the first memorial event to be held since the mines were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July, and is one of the follow-up actions South Korea and Japan agreed to as a condition for the inscription.
