A waterspout was spotted near Ulleung Island early Saturday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said a columnar vortex occurring over a body of water was observed at 7:55 a.m. near Sadong Port on the island.

With a height of about 100 meters, the vortex lasted for 20 minutes.

No reports have been filed on any damage to facilities or vessels.

A waterspout is a pillar-shaped ascending air current that occurs when the wind direction is different in the sky from that of the sea.

The first reported sighting in South Korea was in October 1985 at Ulleung Island.

So far, it's been spotted 23 times including in Incheon, Gangneung and Jeju Island.
