Elderly single-person households are expected to make up 20 percent of all households in South Korea by 2047.

According to data from Statistics Korea on Wednesday, there were one-point-66 million single-person households of seniors aged 65 or older last year. This is 35-point-one percent of all elderly households.

The statistics agency forecast such households to continue to expand, doubling to around three-point-35 million by 2037 and surpassing four-point-05 million, or one-fifth the total, by 2047.

Seniors aged 65 or older currently take up 16-point-five percent of the population, and they are expected to expand to take up more than 20 percent in 2025, the threshold for a super-aged society.

By 2060, they are projected to take up 43-point-nine percent, which means every 100 people of productive age will have to provide support for 91-point-three seniors.
