S. Korean Military to Launch 3rd Submarine Capable of SLBMs

The military is set to launch its third locally developed three-thousand-ton-class submarine that can fire ballistic missiles, as part of a program to bolster the nation's underwater defense capabilities.

According to the Navy, a ceremony will be held in the southeastern city of Ulsan on Tuesday for the 83-point-five-meter-long submarine named after independence activist Shin Chae-ho.

The vessel is the last of three Changbogo-Three Batch-One submarines after the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho and Ahn Mu were launched in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

The three submarines each have six launch tubes capable of firing ballistic missiles. 
South Korea conducted its first submarine-launched ballistic missile was test earlier this month from the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho.

Following test operations, the Shin Chae-ho is set to be delivered to the Navy in 2024.
