The prosecution has reportedly launched a formal investigation into a political meddling scandal surrounding former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl.
According to sources within the legal community on Thursday, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office began a probe on the case two days after a criminal complaint was filed against Yoon and six others.
The complaint was filed by Choi Kang-wook, the chair of the minor-progressive Open Democratic Party. Choi was of the pro-government figures targeted by the alleged political meddling scheme, according to online outlet Newsverse, which first broke the exclusive.
The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office also reportedly dispatched a task force of prosecutors and inspectors to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office to assist in the investigation. Earlier, Justice Minister Park Beom-kye called for a swift probe into the case saying the scandal may sully the honor of the prosecution.
Those close to the issue have speculated that the prosecution may collaborate with the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials(CIO), who earlier launched a separate investigation into the scandal.
