The Daegu appellate court dismissed an appeal of a 20-year prison term for a young woman convicted of abandoning a three-year-old girl in a house in the southeastern city of Gumi, causing her death.

The Daegu High Court on Thursday rejected appeals by both the 22-year-old woman, identified by her surname Kim, and the prosecution.

Kim was convicted of causing the girl’s death, whom she believed was her daughter but was found to be her sister, by negligence.

In June, a lower court sentenced Kim to 20 years in prison, ordered a 160-hour child abuse treatment program and banned employment at child-related facilities for ten years.

Meanwhile, Kim's mother, identified by her surname Seok, who is also the little girl's actual biological mother, appealed her eight-year sentence for switching Kim’s child with her own between March and April 2018.
