Eating at expressway rest stops will be prohibited with only takeouts allowed during the Chuseok holiday.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Thursday measures that are part of special transport regulations for Chuseok that will be put in place for six days starting Friday.
Restaurants at all expressway rest stops managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation will only allow take-out. Also, temporary screening clinics will be set up at nine major expressway rest areas.
Additionally, from next Monday to Wednesday, the government will collect highway tolls, in contrast to prior the global pandemic when the fees were waived during major holidays, and use the revenue to fund quarantine efforts.
Meanwhile, the Korea Transport Institute estimates that nearly 32-point-three million people will visit their hometowns during the holiday.
A forecast five-point-four million people will travel each day, down a little over 16 percent from 2019, before the outbreak of COVID-19. Compared to last year’s Chuseok, the figure is up some three-point-five percent, and down 16.4 percent from 2019.
