Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for a man on trial for murdering a woman he allegedly stalked, as well as her sister and mother, inside her apartment in Seoul's Nowon district in March.
During a final hearing for the case at the Seoul Northern District Court on Monday, prosecutors requested the maximum legal penalty against the accused, Kim Tae-hyun, arguing that his alleged crimes indicate that the accused essentially attached no value to human life.
Citing Kim's motive, criminal method and outcome, they emphasized that he should be permanently segregated from society for justice to be served and to prevent similar crimes.
Kim's legal counsel asked that the court hand down an appropriate punishment for his client in accordance with the facts of the case, pointing out that Kim confessed to the crimes from the beginning and has shown remorse.
Following the prosecution's request for the death penalty, Kim read from a pre-written statement, saying it agonizes him to think about the victims who lost their lives through his horrific acts. He then apologized, saying he will live the rest of his life trying to atone for his guilt while seeking redemption.
