Eight out of ten South Koreans say they have no plans to visit their hometowns or travel during the upcoming Chuseok holiday amid the protracted COVID-19 pandemic.

In Gallup Korea's survey of one-thousand-one adults from Tuesday to Thursday, 77 percent of respondents said they did not plan to travel for more than one night during the five-day holiday starting September 18.

Nineteen percent said they were planning to visit their hometowns for more than a night, while only two percent said they were going to travel elsewhere.

The number of respondents planning visits home during Chuseok last year fell below 30 percent for the first time since 1989. This is the second consecutive year that the rate stayed under 20 percent.
