The government has appointed former Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee as the nation’s ambassador for economy and trade.

The Foreign Ministry said the decision regarding the honorary post was reached during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.

The government appoints a figure who is equipped with expertise and has a level of recognition to the post. For one year, the ambassador provides support in diplomatic activities in trade and economy.

A proven expert in the field, Yoo has worked as a councilor at the South Korean Embassy in China and in key posts in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. She wrapped up her career in public service in late June.

Last year, she was a finalist in the race for the World Trade Organization's (WTO) director-general post.

The ministry believes Yoo will support diplomatic efforts in the areas of economy and trade drawing from her diverse experience and rich people network at a time when the global economy is seeing a structural transition.

It also hopes Yoo will make suggestions on mid- and long-term overseas economic strategies and promote communication with businesses.
