A new survey finds that some two million adults may lack basic reading, writing and math skills required in everyday life.

The Education Ministry and the National Institute for Lifelong Education made the assessment based on the results of a survey on adult literacy and math skills revealed on Tuesday.

The survey was conducted on ten-thousand-429 adults nationwide between last October and this January.

It estimated that four-point-five percent of the adult population, or roughly two million people, lacked basic reading, writing and math skills. This is down two-point-seven percentage points from a 2017 survey.

According to the survey, the level of these skills was lower among adults who were elderly, had a low monthly household income, had a low educational background and lived in farming or fishing communities.
