South Korea's military has apparently conducted a successful test-launch of a domestically developed submarine-launched ballistic missile(SLBM).

According to a source within the military who declined to be identified, the confidential September 1 launch from the Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine was carried out under the purview of the state-run Agency for Defense Development, adding that the test was successful.

The military plans to hold one or two additional tests, which will also be closed to the public, before it officially begins producing SLBMs and loading them on the brand new Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine.

The vessel is the country’s first domestically produced sub and is equipped with six vertical launch system(VLS), a key feature that sets it apart from other naval submarines. The South Korean navy commissioned the vessel on August 13.

The SLBMs were developed based on the Hyunmoo-2B short-range ballistic missile and are reportedly tagged as Hyunmoo 4-4.

With the latest trial, South Korea has become the eighth nation in the world to develop its own SLBMs.
