South Korean President Moon Jae-in has declared Pohang a special disaster zone after Typhoon Omais tore through the southeastern port city at the end of last month.

Presidential spokesperson Park Kyung-mee told reporters on Monday that the move will allow the central and local governments to allocate and execute emergency relief funds for recovery work to help provide stability for the typhoon victims.

The government will also slash gas and electricity fees for Pohang residents and offer other financial aid and benefits for the victims, she said.

Pohang incurred property damages of an estimated eight-point-eight billion won due to torrential storms and floods brought on by Typhoon Omais, according to figures released by the state disaster management authority.
