Government authorities started accepting applications for COVID-19 relief payouts on Monday.

The government will hand out 250-thousand won per person to the lower 88 percent of the income bracket.

Eligible people can fill out an application on credit card websites according to a five-day rotational system based on the final digits of their year of birth.

People whose birth years end in one or six can apply on Monday, with Tuesday for those with two or seven, Wednesday for three or eight, Thursday for four or nine and Friday for five or zero.

The application period runs through October 29 and eligibility will be determined by each household's national health insurance payment in June. This can be checked on credit card websites, mobile apps and at call centers, as well as the homepage and mobile at for the National Health Insurance Service.

People can check their eligibility and apply for the funds regardless of their birth year after the first week of application. The payouts will be given as vouchers or prepaid cards, or through credit or debit cards.

This is the second time the government is providing emergency relief grants to the general public to offset the fallout from the pandemic. It paid all households relief funds of up to one million won in May last year.
