The number of people who have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot in South Korea surpassed 30 million on Sunday, about six months after the country launched its vaccination program.

According to the state vaccine task force, as of 11:15 a.m. Sunday, a total of 30 million 100 people received their first dose of the vaccine since February 26. The figure represents 58-point-four percent of the nation's population.

Seventeen-point-seven million people, or 34-point-six percent of the population, have been fully vaccinated.

The government plans to complete the first round of vaccinations for at least 36 million people or 70 percent of the population before September 19, when the Chuseok holiday begins. It aims to achieve herd immunity by October.

An official at the task force said the nation is expected to achieve the goal of 70 percent as planned.
