Daily COVID-19 cases have bounced back to the two-thousands for the first time in a week.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) said on Wednesday that two-thousand-25 cases were confirmed throughout the previous day, bringing the total caseload to 253-thousand-445.

The new figure is 653 more than the previous day and marks the fifth time the daily tally exceeded two-thousand since the pandemic began.

The last time it hit that range was Wednesday last week, when two-thousand-154 cases were reported.

While fewer than 15-hundred cases were reported on Monday and Tuesday largely because of fewer tests on the weekends, the average daily caseload for the past week stood at one-thousand-716. For the 57th straight day, daily figures had four digits.

Among the latest cases, one-thousand-992 were locally transmitted infections, while 33 were foreign imports.

By region, the Seoul metropolitan area reported one-thousand-415 cases, or 71 percent of local infections, including 662 in the capital city and 630 in Gyeonggi Province.

Non-capital regions added 577 cases, including 86 in South Chungcheong Province and 68 each in Busan and Ulsan.

Seven more people died of the virus, raising the death toll to two-thousand-292. The nation’s fatality rate stands at zero-point-nine percent, while the number of critically ill patients dropped by ten from the previous day to 399.
