The government has earmarked five-point-64 trillion won in next year's budget to expand the country's infectious disease response system, including COVID-19 vaccine purchases and reinforced quarantine.
Such details were included in the government's 2022 budget plan announced on Tuesday.
Around two-point-six trillion won will be spent to purchase 90 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, 80 million of which will be Pfizer and Moderna with the other ten million expected to be developed by local companies.
Some 500 billion won will be injected towards research and development of technologies and quarantine systems to counter new and variant types of infectious diseases.
Seven-hundred billion won will be injected next year to establish a global vaccine hub for development and production of new vaccines, with a total two-point-two trillion won expected to be spent by 2026.
Between 2022 to 2023, the government aims to set up a one-trillion-won vaccine fund to support short-term domestic vaccine development.
One-point-54 trillion won has been set aside to support quarantine efforts, including operations of treatment facilities and testing sites, amid the prolonged pandemic.
