With the arrival of a second military plane from Islamabad, 390 Afghans have now completed their escape from their Taliban-claimed home country to South Korea, or one less than previously announced by the Seoul government.
According to a Foreign Ministry official on Friday, the person was identified as not being on the South Korean government's list during a final identity check conducted during a stopover in Pakistan. The official explained the lapse as a result of the chaotic and urgent circumstances of the mission.
The person was returned to Kabul on a military plane, where he or she was handed over to the U.S. military, the official added.
The remaining 13 Afghans arrived at Incheon International Airport Friday afternoon, rounding out the group of specialists who had worked with the South Korean Embassy and humanitarian and relief facilities in Afghanistan, as well as their families.
The first group of 377 were transferred to a state facility in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, where they will stay for six to eight weeks to fulfill their quarantine as well as to receive training on adapting to life in South Korea.
