The South Korean government is preparing to offer free-of-charge college education for younger children in low-income households and multi-children families as part of efforts to assist young adults and help the public overcome the fallout of the protracted pandemic.

Presidential Spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said on Tuesday that President Moon Jae-in was briefed on special proposals to aid young adults, including coverage of college tuition for those who are a third child and thereafter in a household whose income falls below 200 percent of the median income.

Families in the lower 80-percent income bracket are expected to benefit from these measures.

Children of low-income families will also be eligible for more state-sponsored college scholarships.

According to the spokesperson, Moon assessed the measures as encouraging, adding they are already factored into next year’s budget plans so young people will be able to immediately feel their positive impact.

The government plans to specify the details of these special measures during a youth policy coordination committee meeting to be presided over by Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum on Thursday.
