The government says it will complete preparations by the end of this month to disburse the latest round of COVID-19 relief funds for the general public.
Second Vice Economy and Finance Minister Ahn Do-geol relayed the position in a fiscal management meeting on Friday. Still, the government will have to consult with quarantine authorities before unveiling the exact timing for the release of the funds.
Ahn pledged efforts to finalize preparations to release the eight-point-six trillion won in payouts for the public and other relief funds, adding that details such as who will receive them, and where the money can be used, as well as setting up related online systems will be included in the announcement.
However, he noted such a payout needs to take into account the ongoing fourth wave of the viral outbreak and said they will need to closely consult with health authorities before proceeding with the handouts.
The government had initially planned to unveil a timetable this week regarding payouts but deferred its announcement as a recent spike in infections persisted.
Health authorities have expressed concern that these funds may trigger an adverse impact if they are misconstrued as a sign that the government is ready to ease social distancing protocols, and unravel the government's efforts so far to contain the spread of the virus.
